Oh, I certainly appreciate the ramifications of a positive versus a negative attitude; but, let’s examine something much more concrete – the power of the right attitude. It all starts with:
Gratitude is an appreciation for your journey thus far. Whether you are presently experiencing a mountain top high or a valley of despair, you must value your successes and setbacks and all that you have – relationally, physically and financially. Others may appear to have so much more, but that is their story not yours. Your story is truly unique, shaped and refined by your life-lessons learned.
The next factor for the right attitude is:
As long as you have breath, something good, new or exciting can be just around the corner. Remember as a child that feeling of anticipation the night before your birthday or Christmas? As an adult, tomorrow is yet another gift. As an adult, it really is more blessed to give than it is to receive. You can provide a simple act of kindness. You can encourage a team member or a complete stranger with a smile. Tomorrow may just deliver you another gift, of business opportunity.
Trust me, I can complain with the best of them – “Table for a pity party of one?” – But, when I consider this simple equation:
Gratitude + Expectation = Attitude
I quickly set myself back on the right course. It brings me back to a childlike faith. As a child in our small church, we used to sing choruses such as – “Count your many blessings, name them one by one,” or “Something good is going to happen to you.”
- Gratitude is yesterday – that which is behind you.
- Expectation is tomorrow – that which is in front of you.
- Today, and only today, is your attitude!
- Commit to starting and ending your day with the Right Attitude.
The right attitude combined with the right actions will lead you to the mountains of achievement – success with significance and a legacy of leadership.
Do you have a mountaintop achievement story to share? Do pass it on.
